American Goldfinch

A small North American finch. Breeding males are lemon-yellow with a black forehead and black-and-white wings — the look in this frame (the file was named “yellow finch”). Females and winter birds are duller olive-yellow. Goldfinches favor thistle/nyjer and sunflower seeds and often visit backyard feeders.
Field ID notes
- Breeding male: bright yellow body, black cap, black wings with white markings
- Female / nonbreeding: duller yellow-olive; still a conical finch bill
- Undulating flight; often in small flocks near weeds and feeders
- Not a raptor — previously miscategorized in an older gallery pass
Why this is a useful practice bird
Compared with hummingbirds, goldfinches move slower relative to the frame, perch more, and give cleaner silhouettes. They are a good step before chasing hover specialists.
